Journalism

If you are here, I assume it is because you wanted a reprieve from the massive wall of obligation that your email inbox feels like at the moment.

Or because you have an idea and no time to cover it yourself.

I can fix that. If you want me to.

What you will get is someone who will go out to get a story and return with an extra three that you may want as well. Trust me, I left my last inhouse role a list of 90+ potential stories. And I have another 92 of my own across different beats just waiting for a home.

What you will get is someone who will call a spade a spade. And a genocide, a genocide. And I expect you to call it that too. You will get someone who will talk to people with care and respect but be firm and direct. Someone who has been involved with handling media ethics, someone who cares that sources, topics, audiences and colleagues are respected and cared for.

You get someone who can write and can edit audio and video. Someone with such a trivia-minded brain that they become an expert in a subject that they don’t even like. You get someone who can speed read and finds it genuinely useful and interesting to know minute details of how legislation that bores the pants off someone else actually impacts people’s lives. And who will probably find a potential story on page 285 of a 400-page government policy.

You get someone that builds systems and thinks about how random things may be connected to other things. A gold mine if you want to find the stories that have not been told yet.

And you can see some of that work already if you click through to view my portfolio. I have written across various beats: politics, business, science, property development, health, the arts and sports. And when curious, I do interesting, quirky things like build an entire journalism ecosystem in Obsidian or a map to follow the Tour de France.

I work for anyone globally, in a freelance capacity, as a stringer or on contracts. I retain copyright. I work for $1 AUD per word submitted or $100 AUD per hour of work. Payment on submission of work. Piece rates can be negotiated. Late invoices will get an extra 2% added each day as a late penalty fee. If something has genuinely gone wrong in your payment system your best option is to tell me as soon as possible.

If you want to read my work a bit more before commissioning me, then have at it.

If you are keen to hire me then hit the button below and send me a brief with story topic, rates, deadlines, angles, the style guide if you have one and anything else I will need to be aware of. If I cannot take the work on, I have a network of fellow freelancers to pass it on to so please indicate if you want that to happen.
